Testing confirms onsite plant possibility
Emergent Resources has received positive results from a recent diamond core testwork program at its Beyondie iron project in Western Australia’s Mid West region. The company said it has confirmed the potential production of high-grade direct reduction quality magnetite concentrate with a low level of impurities. Results of up to 72.8 per cent iron and a low 1.1 per cent silica shows potential for an onsite plant to produce a direct reduction concentrate exceeding 68 per cent iron.
The main advantage of this feedstock is less energy is used during smelting than hematite. This means that little flux will be required in the smelting process and will result in an increase in the overall grade of the burden.
Direct reduction grade is sold at a premium as it can lead to significant fuel and coke savings in the blast furnace in addition to enhancing productivity. Also the very low sulphur and phosphorus levels reduce pollution emissions.
