About 250 jobs will be created as part of the expansion of the Longford gas plant in Victoria, a project owned by BHP Billiton and Esso Australia.

BHP and Esso have each committed US$520 million ($496.30 million) to the new gas conditioning plant at Longford, in the Gippsland basin.

The Longford plant processes oil and gas from the Bass Strait, and the new gas conditioning plant will remove carbon dioxide from gas.

Construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of calendar 2013, and will create about 250 jobs, Esso said.
