Atlas Iron has begun production at its Mt Dove iron ore mine, 65km south of Port Hedland in the Pilbara.
It is the third mine Atlas has in operation and could be joined by two more before the end of this year.
Mining was underway at Mt Dove in November 2012 and initial production began the following after completion of the ore crusher. First haulage to port is expected within the next week.
“Atlas has a proven track record in Pilbara mine development, having brought three mines into production within four years,” said Atlas managing director Ken Brinedan.
“The company is on target to bring five mines into production within five years with the addition of the Abydos mine in June and the first phase of the Mt Webber mine (subject to board approval) in December.”
Production from Mt Dove will see Atlas reach an 8 million tonnes per annum rate at its Pilbara projects.
