Mark Calderwood will step down as gold producer Perseus' managing director after nine years at the helm.

The Africa-focused miner, which produces gold at its Edikan gold mine in Ghana, on Monday said the move comes as the company transitions to an integrated gold exploration, development and production company.

Chief financial officier Jeff Quartermaine will be the company's new managing director and chief executive officer from February 1.

Mr Quartermaine had worked on moving Perseus' Edikan gold project to production and prepared the Sissingue gold Project in Cote d'Ivoire for a development decision, Perseus said.

Mr Calderwood will take up a part-time technical role with the company.

Perseus Chairman Reg Gillard said Mr Caldwerwood had done a great job in guiding the company through the early stages of its corporate development.

"He has assembled a high-quality asset base and a strong team of people and we are now in a very solid position to capitalise on Mark's outstanding work and to continue the company's transition to becoming a multi-mine, mid-tier gold producer," Mr Gillard said in a statement.

Group financial controller Elissa Brown will succeed Mr Quartermaine as chief financial officer.
